Hi. I’m Samantha Jennings, or Sam for short. I’m a 13th Gen Vampire. I have no idea how I became a Vampire. One morning I woke up and found that I had been dumped in London, in a blacked-out room somewhere near Camden Town. I don’t remember much of what happened to me only that I found out the hard way why we don’t go out in the sunlight..
As I was saying, I had been dumped in an old house somewhere near Camden. It was pitch black, save for a little candle burning in the corner. I had no recollection of how I got there, or even why I was there.
A beam of sunlight that streamed into the room through one of the holes in the black curtain hurt like fuck when I put my head near it. I can still remember that pain. I also remember the pain of needing to feed. I sat in this dingy hovel till the sun went down, so as not to repeat the bad experience I had just suffered. Don’t ask me why; it just made sense to me at the time.
Just as the sun was setting and passing out of existence for another night, a guy walked in through the door. Ah, you’re awake I see, he said. Yes, I replied. Where the fucking hell am I and who the fuck are you? My name’s Guynan. I found you passed out in an alley just up the road. I saw the bite marks on your neck and thought I’d better bring you here. Do you remember anything about the person that sired you?
Sired me? What the hell do you mean? The person who turned you. Turned me? I asked. I still don’t know what you mean..
Well, this might freshen your memory dear, he said as he pulled a youngish-looking girl into the room. She can’t be any older than eighteen, I thought to myself. He proceeded to pull a flick-knife out of his pocket and cut the girl’s wrist. She tried to pull away from him as he did so, but didn’t manage to get very far. Looking closer in the dim light, I could see she had a gag around her mouth. As I looked down to the girl’s wrists I could see blood starting to seep from the wounds. I started to feel sick. My stomach was killing me. Pain wracked my body.
By my reckoning, you haven’t eaten for days, Guynan told me.. Eaten? Eaten what? I asked.
Feed, he said. As he was talking, the urge got stronger; I couldn’t hold it back any longer. He flung the girl down in front of me. Before she could try to get up I jumped on her, and with a mixed scream of horror and delight at what I was doing I grabbed her wrist and bit down hard. As I did so, I could feel my body tingle all over and my mind was overtaken by the urge to feed. As I fed the girl’s gag slipped off and she let out an almighty scream as she died. I pulled away and crawled into a corner, licking my lips and fingers, removing any trace of blood that was on me. I looked up.
What are you trying to tell me? That I’m a Vampire? I asked. Well, as you can see, your wounds are starting to heal already, he replied. But Vampires don’t exist. Yes they do, Guynan smiled. But it doesn’t make any sense, I argued. Guynan turned round to me. You’re lucky I found you when I did. You were on the brink of death. It would have been better to let me die. No it wouldn’t, you stupid bitch! he said as he looked at me. You get to live forever. Well as long as you can stay alive, that is. I sensed a great power within you, or I wouldn’t have saved you.
As the days went on, Guynan taught me how to fight, how to gather information, and many other things. Many a time I looked at him and wondered why he was so nice to me. I still harboured hate for the fact that I had been turned for want of a better word.
So, one day I decided to do some research to try to find out who had done this to me. I wanted them dead. It had started out as a sort of want, but soon it became an obsession to me. I didn’t find anything out until years later, though.
I had been investing money for some years, so now I had enough to start up a small business with the help of Guynan, who I still kept in touch with. He always seemed to be close to me; he was closer than I thought.
It was one day when I was sitting in my office/apartment in Camden - which was above the club I had set up with the help of Guynan that the phone rang. It was Snake, one of my oldest and closest friends. Hi. So, what have you got for me this time? Well, said the voice on the other end of the line, you know that information you’ve been looking for? I’ve found something that might interest you. I’ll be round at about ten.
While I was waiting, there was a knock at the door. Come, I called. The door opened and in walked Guynan. Long time no see. Yeah, he replied. Guy, where have you been? I asked, putting my head on one side. Oh, doing some stuff, he remarked offhandedly. Who is it this time? I asked, as if it was an automatic reaction. Well, if you will employ drug addicts I didn’t know that, I frowned. Well okay, I hired them, said Guynan with a smile. Or, at least, I pointed them in the right direction. You’re no better than them. No better? he sneered at me. Well, at least I’m not doing it all the time, he scowled. Anyway, I thought you were going to leave all the hiring and firing to me? I did, he said, smiling. So, what did you do with the bodies? I asked. It’s okay, it’s okay. They’re disposed of. Well, I suppose I’d better get some new staff in, I remarked. He leant forwards and spoke. Don’t start messing with me Sam. Remember: I still own half this place. I know, I said. He turned on his heel and walked out the door, slamming it behind him.
I got up and followed him. He was halfway down the stairs to the club. As I looked at him, he spun round. Don’t start fucking with me Sam. Remember who made you I rolled the words round in my head and stared at him. As I did he spun back round and walked out of the door into the club. I followed, but by the time I had got there he had disappeared into the usual steady night crowd of alternative clubbers. Just as I was about to go back up, the main doors opened. I saw a silhouette of Guynan against the night sky, then the doors closed again.
I went back to the office and sat down. The door opened again. As it did, I spun around and shouted, still thinking about what Guy had said. What the fuck do you want now? A small shaved head peered round the door. It was one of the bouncers from downstairs. It’s Mr Snake for you Sam. Show him in, show him in you idiot! I said. What have I told you before? Just show him up the stairs, for fuck’s sake! Yes, miss. Go on, go! I said. As he did, Snake popped his head round the door. He looked at me with one eye; the other was closed from bruising. Are you okay? he asked. Yeah, I’m fine. It’s just that I could hear you from the bottom of the stairs, and that’s not easy on nights like this, he smirked. Oh, it’s okay. Its just Guy being an idiot again, I told him, grinding my teeth. I still don’t know why you don’t just cut your apron strings from him, you know, he said.
Well, I’d never had been able to set this place up if I had, would I? I told him, smiling. Plus, he’s helped me out many a time. Okay, okay, said Snake. But he said something strange earlier I said, frowning. What do you mean? Well, he said remember who made you?. In that case, you’re not going to like the info I’ve managed to get for you, Snake replied, looking worried. Why’s that then? Well, it’s got something to do with Guynan and your Sire. Really? Let me see. I was handed a file with loads of information about Guynan and his whereabouts, and where he’d been over the last hundred years or so.
I found out from one of his lackeys that he was the one that Sired you, Snake said, coming round to the back of my desk to hold me. But how? And why? I asked, shrugging him off and going to sit down on the sofa, stunned by what was coming from Snake’s mouth. You mean all this was his doing? He’s been lying to me all these years, I said. As to where it was; there’s the info on that in there. I looked through the file some more. As I did it all began to flash back to me. The pain, the terror, the utter calm afterwards. Without me even thinking about it, I picked up the Samurai sword off the wall that had been given to me by Snake many years ago.
I’d never been sure how old Snake actually was, but as far as I could tell he was at least three hundred. Why have you got that out Sam? You know I said not to use it unless you really need to. I grabbed my guns and rammed them into the holsters that I kept by my side at all times.
I ground my teeth. Can you take me to this place? I asked, pointing to the pile of papers. What place? The one where all this began, I said. Okay, but I think you should be prepared to get a really bad shock
Snake took me to a warehouse just around the corner from the club. As he forced the doors open, I was blasted with a smell of damp and rot, just like a tomb. All of a sudden it was like I was back there again. It came in bits and pieces like watching a movie with the main scenes cut out. I saw Guy’s face, then I saw fangs. Then the sensation of utter calm came over me. As it did, I fell to my knees and began to sob. But why? I asked. Why Snake? Why did he do it? Because you have potential that not even you’ll ever realise. That’s why. I hate him so much. I can’t go back and act the same around him ever again, you know I said in the middle of sobs.
I looked up at Snake. He bent down, hugged me, and gave me a kiss. We’ll sort it out. We’ll sort it. But how? I asked, sobbing in his arms. I know people who can help. No. This is something I want to do myself. I gripped the sword by my side until my knuckles went white.
I stood up, brushing the tears away from my eyes, and turned to Snake. Show me how to use this properly. Snake bowed his head. I don’t think this is right, but I will show you how to use it for your own protection. Come on, we have to go. It’s getting too close to sun-up. We’re near to my place. We’ll head over there and I’ll show you how to use that sword properly when we get back.
We headed off, walking with my head resting on Snake’s shoulder and his arm around my waist. I looked at him and thought to myself. I want you with me. He stopped and kissed me full on the lips. I’ll always be here for you. You know that, he said, smiling.
We went down an alley. Snake threw open a door to a small warehouse-like building. I’d been there many a time when I’d wanted to talk, or just to have some fun. He reached up and flicked a switch, and the lights came on. It was a huge building with a small apartment up some stairs at the side. You never told me how you got this place, I said. He smiled. When you have cash, you can get anything Sam. You know that.
We went up the stairs and he opened the door. There was a huge double bed, and a desk at the other end of the room, with a computer and a phone on it. The computer was on, and I could see that Snake had been playing at being a hacker again. It was one of his many pastimes. I was sure he was better than he said he was.
What the fuck happened to your eye? I asked. You didn’t tell me. Oh, I just got into a fight looking for that info, that’s all. It’ll be gone soon. Look, it’s healing already, he said. Right, let’s get down to it, then. He pulled two wooden swords from behind the desk and threw one to me. Right, catch he said. I caught it. Okay, I’ll start by showing you the right stance. All that night and the next day, and the next week or so, he showed me how to use the sword he had given me. Everything he showed me I soaked up with the enthusiasm of somebody who has finally found herself a purpose in life.
One day I woke up in Snake’s bed, the way I had many times before, but this time he was next to me. I slowly came out of the daze of sleep and remembered what had happened the day before. I smiled and stroked the still-sleeping Snake. He slowly woke up and smiled at me. Hi sexy, he said. I smiled, stretched, and got out of bed. I need to eat.
Good idea, he said. He went downstairs and soon came back with breakfast. Just as I was about to feed, I heard a loud crash and Guynan’s voice. Snake, where the fuck are you? it screamed. You worthless fucking piece of scum! I’ll fucking slit your throat, then pull your fucking heart out!
I quickly pulled my clothes on and groped around on the floor for my sword. Snake’s hand came down on mine and I saw his eyes look at me. Are you sure you want this? he asked. I looked back. Yes. I’m sure. I flung the door to the apartment open and screamed; Are you looking for Snake, or are you looking for me? Ahh, Sam, my little girl. How are you my dear? came the reply from the darkness. I’m okay now I know what the truth is I replied.
I jumped off the landing and landed with a thud. I looked into the darkness and saw nothing. All of a sudden, there was a noise behind me. I spun round to find myself face to face with Guynan. He smiled. Hello, my pretty. I looked right into his eyes. Why didn’t you ever tell me? I asked. Well, that’s something else for your little boyfriend up there to find out for you, isn’t it? he replied. I drew my sword. This has nothing to do with Snake. It’s just between you and me. He grinned. Maybe, maybe not
He jumped over my head and started for the stairs, and burst through the door. I ran up the stairs, but when I reached the top it was tool ate. Snake was lying there on the bed with a wooden stake through his heart. I spun to see where Guynan had gone and saw him standing in the corner. I felt myself start to lose control. I ran at Guynan and drew the sword, while screaming. I slashed and hacked the best I could, but to no avail. He was gone.
I didn’t know how, but he was gone. I walked over to the bed and looked at my lover, and fell to my knees sobbing. I felt movement from Snake’s lifeless body and moved my head. We tried. Go, before he gets you. Run north to Preston. I have some friends who will be able to help. The information’s on the computer, he said. No, I won’t leave you. I won’t! I replied as his body went limp.
That night I ran like I never had before. I stayed in the sewers all the next day. That night I made arrangements to head north. I booked a ticket. I hadn’t dared to head back to the club in case Guynan was waiting for me there, so the next night I boarded the train and stowed my gear in an overhead compartment. When I got to Preston, I headed straight to the address Snake had given to me in case of an emergency. They took me in and helped me to set myself up here in Preston. From time to time I think of Guynan and how I still want to kill him, and I still think of Snake. I will always think of Snake. I occasionally go back to London to hunt out Guynan, but I don’t seem to be able to find him. The club’s still there, perhaps one day I’ll be able to find him and end this nightmare for once and for all
